Looking for a group birth prep class that evidence-based and non judgmental? Maybe even fun? We would love to have you in one of our Fall classes held @hudco in Dobbs Ferry.

The lonely view of a doula during a recent unplann

The lonely view of a doula during a recent unplanned Cesarean. And a poem to honor c-section awareness month ❤️ Three sessions with an acupuncturist. Four sessions with a chiropractor. Dates. EPO. Many miles walked and countless stairs climbed. Miles circuit. Spinning babies. And then, 42 weeks. Mama is ready to meet her baby. Induction. Slow and steady. Soup and stories and finally “real” contractions. Standing, lunging, ball circles, laughter and so many hip squeezes. Vomit. No sleep. Epidural. Finally rest as the sun comes up. Slow and steady. Peanut ball, flying cowgirl, hands and knees (the nurse is freaking 😬) snacks, honey, Netflix. 36 hours. Finally 10cm! Pep talks, strength and encouragement. Pushing! Slow and steady. Side Laying, squatting, hands and knees, tug of war. 1 hour turns to 2, 2 to 3. Is he moving? No. So much effort. -1 The. Whole. Time. Mama is ready to meet her baby. Cesarean. She is proud. She is calm. This is the way it needs to be. No rush. No emergency. Deeps breaths and hugs. But then they are gone. And I am alone.

Being a doula, when at its best, is the gentle art

Being a doula, when at its best, is the gentle art of doing nothing. Making no decisions, having no power, no agenda and certainly not giving birth. When I hear “I couldn’t have done it without you”, I think “oh but you did!”.

So what IS a doula? A calming presence, a firm hip squeeze, a soothing phrase, a loving pep talk, a guide to your own choices. A pause button when things feel rushed. And always reassurance that your thoughtful decisions are what is best for you and your baby.
